Li Cheuk-to (Programme Co-ordinator/Editor). A Study Of Hong Kong Cinema
In The Seventies The 8th Hong Kong International Film Festival.
WGT. 501-1 kg. BOOK Dimensions 11 By 8 1/4 Inches. 183 Pages.
Bibliographical Notes, Programme Notes. Filmography, Top 10
grossing Hong Kong films (1970-1979). Names used in this book.
Illustrated throughout with black & white photos. CLIP - The
retrospective this year covers an important decade in the history of
the Hong Kong cinema, In the early seventies, Cantonese films had
virtually vanished from the local scene and most Hong Kong movies
made in this period were Mandarin kung-fu films. The Cantonese
cinema did not revive until Chu Yuan's The House of 72 Tenants
(1973) and Michael Hui's Games Gamblers Play (1974). Films dubbed
in Cantonese gradually became the mainstream of Hong Kong cinema
after 1978. Meanwhile, the popularity of the kung-fu/wuxia films
rose to an unprecedented height in the early seventies, dominating
local screens and making an impact on the international scene as
well. However, kung-fu films began to decline following the death
of Bruce Lee and by the mid-seventies, the whole Hong Kong film
industry was caught in chaos, dictated by opportunistic producers.
It was not until 1979 that a group of young, new directors began to
reverse the situation by paying more attention to the quality of
their films. Introduction Li Cheuk-to 9 10 Hong Kong Cinema and
